(QOTW 11232009) Let's talk about Quests

Greetings, Earthrise Community!
Today we're going to be looking at quests. This week's question revisits
this post
a little bit. You wanted to know...
What are the multiple types of quest systems and how do they work?
Central to the PvE experience, quests in Earthrise are designed to help introduce the players to the tense cultural and political scene that shapes the two conflicting factions fighting for control over the island of Enterra. Even though both factions get their own complex and overarching storyline filled with quests, we recognize that lore fans want to experience all sides of the story. This is one reason why we've made sure a character can experience both sides by changing their character's faction at any time (although the process is not necessarily easy, and there are other prohibitive consequences to doing so). Participants in the main storyline will allow faction members to build up a
contribution score
to a level where it unlocks certain faction based rewards (membership has privileges, so to speak). When you've reached a certain level of contribution, you can claim rewards from faction NPCs - it isn't currency, though.
Interested in travel and exploration? Excellent news for you - storyline quests will also take you on an explorative journey across the entire map, and into some dangerous locations of our mutant-infested island. Looking for something a bit more casual? Feel free to check out the plethora of side quests that help supplement the main storyline, as well as give you something to do for a change of pace. They're also tied into the reputation mechanics, so they're never a waste of time. In addition to the main faction Reputation system, each of the current organizations will provide a rich and varied assortment of quests, both one time only and repeatable quests (although unlike other systems you might be used to, the interval between times you can repeat a certain quest varies between daily, weekly, and the like). Completing requests for Organizations is materially rewarding, but also unlocks faction-specific reputation and
favor points
. While reputation points for organizations unlock access to rewards (and can only be earned the first time any quest is completed), favor points are the main "currency" used to actually purchase rewards. Rewards are genuinely meant to be earned, and players will have to work hard to gain enough favor with an organization or faction to get the very best rewards available. Favor points are not static, so choose carefully - points specific to one organization may be lost when helping out enemy organizations, so you will have to decide where you want to be, what your goals are, and who your friends will be (NPC and otherwise) on the vast and rich global political map of Enterra.
That's it for this week, but before we go, did you know:
This week's #er_funfact: The Lowlands vision was inspired by a Vangelis album called
L'Apocalypse Des Animaux.
See you next week!

Contribution and reputation sound like the same thing, they unlock tiers of rewards. I think that may just be some inconsistent wording. Since "contribution score" and "favor points" were bolded, I'm guessing it's just those two things.

Yep, that's quite possible. I left it separate because a previous QOTW mentioned reputation AS a currency.
Maybe what they were referencing previously were faction points.
Or maybe there really are three separate standings players can have with the factions.
One things for sure, it wouldn't be a QOTW without some ambiguity.

No, they're different. Contribution score isn't currency.

Favor is the currency and contribution unlocks rewards to spend favor on. "Reputation" is really just contribution. Yes?

Sounds interesting, hopefully it'll be expanded upon.
The concept of favor points has been done before, but hopefully Masthead can doing something intriguing with it rather than the basic (complete quest = "faction 1" +200 points, "faction 2" -300 points)

Maybe, but I can't help but think there is a reason they are giving 2 separate terms. Nut job conjecture to follow:
Contribution- something of an informal ranking system, recognizing what you've accomplished in the story line regardless of who you were fighting for (placing some value on your experiences, or for the paranoid: this comes from The Eight who's agenda is beyond this "petty squabble")
Reputation- ie trust and standing
Favor- defined already as a currency
In a way they all work together. Contribution (because I'm a bit paranoid) would show a willingness to work towards a goal you don't fully understand and a certain prowess at achieving those objectives (desirable regardless of the politics involved). The rewards in this case wouldn't be all that direct, maybe early access to bounty listings (10 min head start before they go "public") or a special mark that allows a bit of flexibility from guards on restricted tech.
Rep would be pretty familiar, granting tiers of access (and pricing) for cash and favor purchases.

This part interests me. I like to get sidetracked and do things different all the time, but it annoys me when quests are there without any purpose.
The rest sounds interesting. I never was one for faction grinding, perhaps I'll like this system better.

Technically I think you're correct. They're playing a game of semantics here. I think that they use contribution for the main quest/story line quests for conti/noir. Reputation is used for the other factions. Contribution/reputation are both used to unlock rewards for factions and favor will buy those rewards.

Hopefully reputation only ever goes up because it looks like your character has a limited "reputation potential" for any one faction. (i.e. quests only give reputation the first time).
Thus, if I grind up Noir, then change my mind and go Continoma, hopefully my Noir reputation stays high (even though I'm sure my Noir favor will end up in the trash can). Otherwise, if I decide that I really don't like Continoma and would much rather like to be back in Noir, I would have no way to re-gain my reputation with them (having consumed all the quests the first time I did Noir).

That makes no sense Ael. Why would Noir preserve your reputation even if you were working for the enemy. We know there are repeatable quests, maybe those could allow you to rebuild your reputation. I don't think flip flopping factions should be made easy. It should be a big decision.

They alread posted that switching factions is not going to be an easy thing. It's not something you're going to do every other week. I think you're mixing up favor and reputation. Reputation will be trashed when switcing to an enemy faction. Favor points might be lost as well, but you might not be able to use them anyway since your reputation is trashed. As for regaining the reputation after you switch back should be hard. You ditched the faction and became a traitor to their cause. You're then switching back having betrayed both factions. Who's going to want to deal with you having proven to be a compulsive traitor?

I think you got it, that you earn Contribution points/score that will unlock rewards and in order to actually get those rewards you use favor points. So, they are different points and everything the are just tied together.

That still doesn't seem quite right. Contribution does not just unlock rewards, it also grants it. Its a specialized mechanic limited to the storyline quests.
In a seperate system, reputation may unlock rewards that can be bought with favour. Or maybe favour "buys" buys items from one pool and reputation unlocks rewards and buys rewards from a separate pool.
You know what would be nice, if QOTWs actually made reference to previous similar QOTWs to either say that the system has changed or to simply build off the previously released information. Otherwise there is too much ambiguity to synthesize anything. Which would explain after all the information they released about crafting we still needed two long QOTWs to clear up how it all works.
