Hello, new to the game and after watching the recent combat video I have two concers.  First, the guy with the gun spends most of his time not firing which, for me, is a game breaker.

I understand the need to balance melee with ranged combat in an RPG environment but you also need to have some semblance of reality in order to immerse yourself in the game play.  Running around with an advanced, automatic weapon that spends most of its existence not firing while some guy is continuously beating on you is an immersion destroyer.

In all seriousness, the balance of winning a fight when it comes to someone wielding an automatic weapon versus someone wielding a knife should weigh heavily in the gun carrier's favor.  The only instance where the knife wielder should have an advantage is when he surprises his opponent in close quarters.

I also have a problem with the combat animations in that video that really need to be changed.  After a character performs an attack his stance should not immediately change to one where he's standing straight up with his weapons 'at rest'.  The animation needs to indicate that he is actively involved in combat rather than looking like he's involved in a conversation.

I will be looking forward to being accepted into Beta and seeing how things develop.

Hi, mr_flood,

You don't need to worry about combat and animations. The video was taken back in April with very early version of our engine and combat system. Based on the feedback by our fans, we decided to make a lot of improvements in the combat system of Earthrise and right now it feels much better. We were not working on animations at that moment, and to be honest we did not expect such a negative reactions about them because the focus of the movies was on gameplay, not graphics. The main reason is that part of our plans is to have state of the art animations upon release and are not worried at all about them, you will see that improvement when we release new videos in the future.

Wow, quick response.

Thanks for the answers and I'll be looking forward to the next combat video and/or seeing it for myself.

Flood, it usually helps to read the forums a bit before posting silly comments about a video that is specifically mentioned to be a "testing" video.
I believe there was also a specific comment about the character being attacked not moving on purpose.

There is no solid knowledge about ER's combat system, since the game is in development.

MS's response to the video feedback has been great. They definitely care that we care. Now if only we could get an update...hint hint...

This opens a double edged-sword can of word kind of problem as I've seen time and time again game developers missing out on great opportunities to improve their game because of a few people making some noise on their official forums.
But in all it can't hurt to listen, my concerns are more on how much of their original vision they're willing to let go.

I greatly look forward to new videos of the game play.  When it's ready though.  I have to admit watching the first video released was a bit like watching Dick Clark on New Year's Eve after the stroke.

I wanna like this game and I don't doubt that there will be plenty of reasons to.  I'm sure that MH has some room to learn from mistakes.  And i think that they probably learned a lot from putting that video out so early in development.  Plenty of people won't get that it was so far from finished it would be unrecognizable once the game goes live.

Off topic: my vote for the next video released would be some 'helicopter-like' flybys of the zones. (not that my vote matters too much)

But truly don't worry about the combat because of that video.  Wait for a more finished product to be presented to the community and see how far it's come. I really look forward to watching this game progress.  And while I hate waiting.  I would wait for the game ER is shaping up and proclaiming itself to be.

Before that video there was no in game video released to the public, and they were right to hold off releasing video as long as they did since that video did not reflect well on the game. No need to encourage them to release things before they show the game in a good light.

I don't think releasing that video was a bad thing.

Obviously the dev's created something they were proud of. However, it did not connect with the target audience. They got some valuable feedback and have decided to change comabt to better meet the expectations of their target market.

The process of releasing information to encourage feedback is an useful means to make sure that what one is creating meets the expectations of the users. The important thing is to make sure that one recieves and responds to feedback from a broad spectrum of potential users.

There is no reason not to make it an interative process.
