Hello everyone!

With the incredible interest in one of our most recent Questions of the Week, we decided to talk about the term 'invisibility' and what it means in an Earthrise context.

Invisibility will play an important role in Earthrise as players will have access to cloaking technology that can let light through from every angle and side and create the optical illusion. This technology will have severe limitations, requiring players to trade off the use of many power-hungry abilities of their suits and weapons in order to support the cloaking effect. We are currently beta testing internally the effects of invisibility both in active combat and as a great way to approach and ambush your opponents and coming up with neat ways to use it in your advantage without disrupting balance; keep in mind we will explain in detail the various aspects of using invisibility in exploration, PvP and even in siege battles. One thing you can know for certain - in Earthrise invisibility will be a tactical tool with serious tradeoffs that must be considered in advance.

Don't disappear on us - we want to hear your thoughts! Keep in mind there will be more information coming, so let's hear it - or join one of the current threads in progress. (Keep in mind duplicate postings in both threads will either be merged in to the proper thread or deleted in accordance with our continual efforts to keep threads on track.)

See you next Monday with another great topic.

Sounds neat.

I am pretty sure if the stealth / invisiblity / cloaking is getting nicely balanced, it can be something fun, instead of something people hate.

If anyone played TF2.. the spy is a awesome example. It is hard to play one, very hard infact, but if you can, there is a killing machine on the loose.

They are trying to make us jealous!
I can't wait to see the creativity behind it.

I'm curious about traveling with stealth and evading with stealth. In the last game I played, AoC, stealth evasion took skill, but stealth travel was OP if you had food buffs to overcome drains on stamina. I hope travel in stealth is only possible in the short distance and is dangerous to maneuver around a populated area because although I'm fairly reasonable I don't like the concept of people getting from point A to point B by hitting the stealth key.

Im sort of disapointed they didnt mention if stealth will be temporary or maintained, what happens to it during combat; does it turn off or just make you more visable.

I guess by beta testing these decisions may still be being made.

I think there are several situations in which the invis suite can come in handy, a melee ambush, trading off protection for the ability to approach the enemy unseen, etc etc...
I wonder if there will be tools to detect "invisible" players...

yep, they already said there'd be ways to detect invisible people -

options for detecting invisibility will be popular enough for the paranoid player who constantly utilizes them to feel safe from being hit from behind.

I was expecting some beta info QotW, but this is great info as well. Gotta love invisibility, I really hope it is truly balanced though.

I would have prefered a bit more meat to this QOTW. Any chance Moll you can dig up another paragraph (this board needs a "beg" emote).

I think the only real detail that it supports is

- that the invisibility is absolute, not translucency, etc., and even thats still up for interpretation.
- players will have to turn off other abilities on their suits to engage a cloak, or that cloaker suits will inherently have fewer abilities.

The second point is definitely interesting, especially if all suits offer the ability to switch off some abilities to power others.

The fact that there will be balance and limitations is sort of the nature of the beast for any multiplayer game.

I'm sure that they'll make invisibility with serious tradeoffs..such as losing shield energy (the thingy which protects you from very bad hits) and stamina or ability energy. So don't worry. Combined with stealth detection gogles ,only a very experienced player can ambush you. It will look much like the Crysisi cloaking.

'S'all good looks like snipers with stealth will probably be ruled out due to suit energy constraints or something like that... which is good

Now it's just a matter of getting my hands on stealth and breaking it as much as possible in beta  Grin

I agree with Kaizeras, I like the way Crysis did their cloaking. First off you weren’t totally invisible (which really total invisibility could only be achieved while standing still). The faster you moved the faster your energy drain, so some1 would have to move slowly to keep the cloak up. This would keep people from running around while cloaked but also allow longer periods while cloaked. From what Moll has told up they are considering allowing the cloak to stay on while in combat as well, though with the use of weapons besides melee (who knows how much energy melee with take) you won’t last that long cloaked anyways. Wink There's my 2 cents

Glad to hear that invisibility will have its drawbacks.

If you can't wear heavy armor-suits and heavy weapons, it'll be fine I guess.

I'd rather people be able to do so, but in a way that they get less out of their invisibility. ie, greater power drain, lower duration, that sort of thing. Limits should be inherent in the gear combinations themselves, not arbitrarily imposed.

I'd also like the focus to be more on active management in the field, rather than what equipment layout you leave your base with.
